He Sees Us

“She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’” Genesis 16:13 (NIV)

I was in a rural village in Kenya with Convoy of Hope, surrounded by Maasai women. We were helping equip these women with options for economic freedom, and several of them now had businesses and were starting to provide for their families.

Despite this powerful impact that would change their families for generations to come, this particular group of women still dealt with harsh struggles: physical and emotional abuse from their husbands and mistreatment from co-wives in polygamous marriages.

As I listened to their stories, I knew they would receive support that would change their lives, and they were receiving unconditional love now from our team members. I knew change in their home lives was possible. But what could I say that would bring immediate hope? How could I encourage them?

The Lord brought Hagar to mind — Abram and Sarai’s servant girl, who was also in a desperate situation. Hagar had been mistreated and discarded, seen as a woman without power or position. I imagine she felt like some of the ladies I sat with: devalued, invisible, and full of despair. Have you ever felt this way? I know I have.

Pregnant and alone, Hagar fled into the wilderness in Genesis 16. And it was there, at her lowest point, that God met her, spoke directly to her, and called her by name.

God sought her out not to condemn her but to restore her. He didn’t remove her from her situation, but He transformed her heart. God affirmed her value and restored her dignity. She responded by giving God the name El Roi in Hebrew: “She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me’” (Genesis 16:13).

While I don’t face the same circumstances as Hagar or the Maasai women I met, I’ve often felt invisible — unseen, unwanted, or unworthy. But in those moments, God has reminded me, as He reminded Hagar: I see you. And that changes everything. He knows my name. He knows yours too. Wherever you find yourself today, He sees you.

When I face challenging seasons and feel unqualified or overwhelmed, I anchor myself in this truth: My worth is found in God alone. He created me in His image. That alone gives me dignity no one can take away.

No matter your culture or the reality you face, here is the truth:

• Your circumstances don’t define your worth — God does.
• He sees you and knows your name.
• His presence restores your dignity and changes everything.
• You are deeply valued.

God, thank You that You are the God who sees. I acknowledge today that my worth and value are found in You alone. Help me stay rooted in Your Truth, and remind me that You are with me daily. I love You and thank You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
